IoT Communication

IoTWireless communicationEdge computing

IoT communication makes networking feel more closely tied to the physical setting. The device, power supply, distance, and connection quality all affect which design choices make sense.

Starting with the environment

I find it useful to ask where a device will operate before choosing how it communicates. A nearby device with reliable power presents a different problem from one that sends occasional readings over a longer distance.

The communication design needs to fit those conditions as well as the data itself.

Comparing choices rather than collecting names

Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, LoRaWAN, and cellular connectivity make the trade-offs concrete: range, power, bandwidth, and infrastructure do not all improve together.

What interests me is being able to explain which constraint drives a choice. A protocol name by itself does not explain whether a system will be useful in its intended setting.

Deciding what needs to leave the device

Edge processing adds another question: which work should happen close to the source, and which data needs to move elsewhere? I connect that to a broader design habit of considering what the system can still do when communication is limited.
